Richard E. O’Connell, 77, of Middletown, died on April 14, 2017 at his home. He was born in Newark and lived in Kearney, moving to Middletown in 1972. Richard worked as a manager of the mail department for P.S.E.&G for 43 years before retiring in 2000. He was a communicant of St. James Church in Red Bank. Richard served his country in Alaska as a Chaplin’s Assistant in the US Army from 1963 to 1965. Richard was a Giants fan and never missed a game, he loved everything Irish – St Patrick’s Day was his favorite day of the year. He was a very proud grandfather who adored all of his grandchildren; they were his pride and joy.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Joan O’Connell; two sons & daughters-in-laws, Tony and Denise O’Connell of Howell, Robert and Amy O’Connell of Howell; three daughters, Cheryl O’Connell of Red Bank, Maureen Denzler of Brick, Anne and Martin Galvanek of Freehold; brother and sister in law, John and June O’Connell of Forked River; sister and brother in law, Patricia and Frederick Marateo of W. Orange; 9 grandchildren, Cynthia, John, Brendon, Isabella, Brody, Mason, Cayla, Aidan, and Emily.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Edmund and Grace O’Connell.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, 115 Tindall Road, Middletown. Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, April 20, 2017 at 9:00 am at the funeral home. A Funeral Liturgy will be offered at St. James RC Church, Broad St., Red Bank, time to be announced. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Middletown.
